My Mom and I were talking just now about Katrina. Her electricity just came back on today. She’s in much better spirits now. I have a friend that has a house in the outskirts of New Orleans (much closer than my family) and she is living in a hotel right now with her family in East Texas. She isn’t even allowed to go see her house. She has no idea what to expect or even when she’ll be allowed to return. But, here’s my thought-why didn’t they evacuate all those people before the storm hit? Betsy was a category 3 hurricane that hit about 40 years ago and it caused alot of devastation. Why would they not just evacuate everyone when a category 5 is coming their way? The people that are stuck there now are very poor people that could not have afforded the gas to even leave New Orleans to evacuate. They had no place to even go. Their family all lived together in New Orleans. They don’t have money for hotel rooms. What do you do in a situation like that? To me, it would have been cheaper to pay for everyone to leave than to deal with what they are now. It’s so ridiculously sad too. Old people and babies are dying from dehydration. The city is very unruly normally and now they are all just going crazy out there. There have been riots and fights and gun fire. They are shooting at the police because they are angry with them for not being able to help. There are no resources to help them though. I am anxious to see which countries are going to help us now in our time of need.
